Fresh, yummy (organic) fruits and veggies

After hearing great things about Door to Door Organics, I finally took the plunge and signed up for the service a few days ago.

We got our first box of organic fruits and veggies today and everything looked (and so far has tasted) delicious. :)

I decided to try out the "small" box (which is $30) on a bi-weekly basis (at first) to see how we like it. If we end up going through all of the food in one week, then I will probably change it to a weekly subscription.

Here is a pic of our loot. (We were missing 4 oranges, however, which will be delivered in our next box.)

Ava enjoyed going through all of it with me and I think it could be helpful to teach her colors and about various fruits and veggies since the menu varies with the growing seasons.

Trying an apple:

Inspecting the strawberries (which she ate w/ her breakfast):

One nice thing about Door to Door is that the produce comes locally from farmers within the surrounding states.

Another nice thing about it is that they allow you to make up to three substitutions on the menu per week. So if you don't like butternut squash, you can substitute something else in it's place.

It might be a little more expensive (than going to the grocery store and buying them yourself) since they are delivering it right to your door, but the convenience is, admittedly, very nice. I am assured of having a variety of fresh fruits and veggies at my door every other week (or every week) if I so choose. Plus once I factor in the time and gas spent to get me to the grocery store, I think it nearly evens out.

Other than the missing 4 oranges (which we will get eventually), so far so good. I'm really happy with it and I think it will be a great thing for us. :)

Three gorgeous photos!
We have Organics-To-You here, but sadly I can't rationalize using it [yet], pricewise and my addiction to grocery shopping.

I thought about doing this when we moved here. It's still a little expensive and I love going to the farmers' markets too much! :) This is one of the best ways to support local farmers, especially the smaller ones. And any way to eat more fruit n veggies has gotta be good!

that is cool! I will have to check out if Atlanta has anything like that ... would be well worth it to me, timewise especially! Great idea! (and great pics!!)

how weird, I was just talking to dh last night about door to door organics, and I check out your blog and there you are talking about the same thing :)

I think we may need the large box though, my kids eat a ton of fruit and veggies every day, it seems like that is all I buy any more, heh.

Speaking of Oranges...

I have been so into Bloog Oranges lately!

Great pictures as always...the apple looks as big as her face! Adorable pose!

Jess - You are addicted to grocery shopping? You could make a killing shopping for people who hate it - like me! ;)

Amy - The Farmer's Market (in a nearby city) here in the summer is a lot of fun, but we don't have the temps to have one year-round. Good for you for supporting the locals. :)

Kellie - Yeah, the timesaving factor is a big one. Hope you have something like that you can take advantage of.

Dawn - That is funny! There are a bunch of ppl in the Cherished Children group who use it so I kept hearing about how great it was. I am glad I signed up.

Harmonia - Thanks. Did you mean blood oranges? A friend just told me about those the other day - I'd never heard of them. Hopefully I'll get a chance to try them through this service.

eatpeaceplease - Ah-ha! (said while slapping my forehead) I didn't realize you were Leslie. Nice to "meet" ya. :)

That looks SO good, Amy!

? about fruits and veggies, only kind-of related, if you don't mind:
As we're getting ready to move your direction, I'm having a really, really difficult time saying good-bye to my beloved, year-round farmers markets. What is the farmers market scene like in the Denver/Boulder area? (not necessarily organic)

Great shots!

And $30 seems pretty darn good to me. If I bought all that at Whole Foods it would have been waaay more AND not delivered to my door!

Julie - I've never been to any of the Denver farmer's markets, but I just looked up a webpage for them if you are interested. - http://www.denverfarmersmarket.com/
I've been to Boulder's FM several times and it's a lot of fun. :) There are a good number of booths and a variety of foods.
When might you all move this way?

Mama C-ta - I never shop at Whole Foods just because we don't have one close by, but that's good to know that I'm getting a good deal. :)

I signed up for a similar thing here in Boston! It is every week, delivered to our house, and was $400 from June 1st to Thanksgiving. At first, I choked on the price, but I don't think it is that much broken down by week (about $15 per week) for a big box of fruits and vegetables. It is worth it if we all eat more, right?

Ava is the CUTES!

That is an excellent idea. Maybe this is worth pondering. I am addicted to it. It's what I spend my extra cash on..not clothes..fresh vegetables and vegetarian food. aye yi.

HL - Not a bad gig at all considering what you get. And I agree, if it's in the house, we're much more likely to consume it. :)

Jess - I say go for it. :) Hey, there are worse additions for sure. ;)

Beckie and I are doing our own version of this. Luckily we live in the central valley, where we have access to local farms. So we are subscribing to T&D Willey Farms. http://www.tdwilleyfarms.com/frwho.html

Same idea and great prices. We should swap recipes. We should get ours next month! Can't wait. :)

Yea Amy, I'm glad you finally jumped on the bandwagon. I love this service as well. I get the small box every 2 weeks and I have to fight to use it all, but it makes me try new recipes! Enjoy.
PS Every once in awhile they goof up, but they are a small business so I try to cut them some slact. Often they throw in extra stuff in mine. One time the bottom of my box was full of potatoes, like 10 lbs of them!! We were only supposed to get 2 lbs! So, it's fun!

Tiffiny, that sounds great! hope you enjoy your produce as much as we've been enjoying ours. :)

Sonja - Yes, I FINALLY did it. ;) I just changed our's to the weekly subscription. Ava eats fruit like crazy now so we are going through it fast. And since we have the veggies in the house, I'm doing good with using them up too. Yay!
And that's cool about the extra perks from them. I think it's a great service.
